In a narrow brushy border between a field and a family cemetery in western Beaufort County, I spotted a hawk sitting rather boldly. Upon approaching, I found that it was a young red-tailed seemingly not long from its cradle. It was perhaps frightened and cried out periodically. Not much later, I noticed an adult red-railed over the field sticking nearby. Soon it landed in the same tree to show the younger one that was time to fly. I chose to make sure I was not a distraction and left the juvenile still in the tree and the parent slowly circling to demonstrate the right answer.
