Killdeer are altricial, their young are mobile and leave the nest almost immediately. This mom and her chicks was around a railroad right-of-way, a pretty good spot for birds that ground nest in rocks. Mom sounds out “pent” regularly to keep them close by as they browse the mud for goodies. I took these August 6.
